Why did the VS System CCG die off?

I thought that the game was majorly popular with a big player base and was doing well for years, then out of no where it died off.

What happened?

I heard on good authority that it was because they cancelled all the monetary prize support. All the semi-pro players who were leading the game just lost interrest then...

The thrid and fourth sets for the game sold poorly in the major retailers, Wallmart/Kmart/Toys'r'Us and so were not asked back, the loss of this major revenue stream diminished the games fiscal potential and so despite continued proffitable sets at the hobby shop level the parent company eventualy decided that greater profit could be made from a game that had a chance of being booked back on the shelves of Wallmart etc.
