CCG Design Forum / Re: Simple, Cardless Game

Since this is a card game forum, my instinct here is to put cards back in the game to represent the units, etc. They just won't come from a deck. They'll come from a bank.

Like in Heroes of the Realm?

What do you think about the game?
It's another game from Richard Garfield.

Richard eliminated all (I think) flaws of M:tG.
a) Buying your way to victory

Isn't the online version demo only and we can't continue our progress unless we buy the game?

What's the difference between the first one and the second one?

CCG Design Forum / Re: Rarity of cards

Another method is to make the common cards look weak while the rares still look powerfull. However, both of them actually have equal potential in the game. Another words, a rare card can catch a person"s eye easily because it looks powerfull and it has simple concepts, thus easy to use. A combo for rare crds will be very obvious. Onece you see the rare card, you will know what card to use withit easily. As for those common cards, they don't look strong at first glance. But I will make them become important pieces of many decks and give them lots of hidden potential. Their combos are not so obvious and you will actually need to use some creativiy to use them in full potential.

I read on TV Tropes that it is the opposite in Magic: The Gathering. The rarer a card, the more complex it is.

Power Rangers Action Card Game has Villain Cards, and they can't be put in the same deck as the Heroes, making the decks less variable because once your opponent sees you play a Villain they immediately knows that there is no Ranger card in your deck.

You guys ever played BattleForge? Its a real-time strategy PC game. However, the units, spells and buildings you're using are not "fixed" like in most RTS. Each unit, spell, etc, are summoned with the "cards" you chose to put in your deck before the game started.
To have new cards, you buy boosters (with real money!) or trade them with other players, just like a CCG.

However, once you chose your deck and the game starts, there's no luck at all. Your "hand" contains ALL the cards of your deck, you don't draw anything. It's up to you to use them wisely. And even if you think you've got the best combo ever, you don't know what's in your opponent's deck, and you can have some pretty bad surprises.

This being said, I can perfectly imagine a CCG where there's no luck at all, where cards act as miniatures. And it would be AWESOME.

It sounds similar to Alteil. How many cards in a deck of BattleForge? Alteil has 30, though you can only choose 25 to play since the other 5 are chosen to be something equivalent of a Shield in Duel Masters. Differs from Duel Masters, though, in Alteil you can choose which cards become your Shields, so the "Shield Trigger"s aren't anything random.

Quote from: CCGer on January 01, 2010, 01:44:58 PMI hope my game can be beginner friendly and at the same time, have depth for advance play. Sometimes I keep thinking, a TCG that is similar to chess might be mind challenging but not fun to play. I am really looking forward to hear your advice and also answers for my questions above. Thanks.

Have you ever heard of ChessHeads? It's a TCG which is played alongside with chess.

thx for the explanation...but im a lil bit confused about LCGs...

if the LCGs are prearranged deck without randomness, so its also means no rarity in LCGs?

IMHO, a game without randomness (and rarity) will eventually die soon or later... everyone will play the same deck because everyone have the same card.

i also dont have any plan to sell cards.
i come from indonesia (thats why my english is bad ^^) where CCG is quitely popular, but there is only one local CCG in my country, which is Vandaria Wars. So i n my pals have decided to make another card game, but my friend told me to use LCG system instead of CCG.

thats why i ask u all about LCG... i just wanna know the comparative advantage between LCG n CCG

Weird... I found this forum using the keyword "forum trading card game" on Google Search and it showed me this post. Looking at the contents and the writing style, I thought it was my post in the past and I vaguely remembered posting it somewhere (Yes, I do know about Vandaria Wars since I'm also an Indonesian). But when I read the username, I was shocked that it was no way my username since I always use the same ID in any forums I join.

Both TV Tropes and Board Game Geek list Trading Card Games as subcategories of Board Games.

Recently I have begun work on another CCG and am having difficulty coming up with a combat mechanic to go along with it. See, the game is going to be about dueling Magi who use magic, items, and intrigue to subdue their opponent. Rather than M:tG, where things are summoned, it is just straight up 1v1 combat. There may be summons of some sort later, but they won't be attackers or defenders per se, more like cards that grant abilities and such. That being said, the bulk of the game will be exchanging spells to over take your opponent.

Do you mean like Ederon? It's an online CCG where you fight your enemy with weapons, shield, punches, kicks, and magics. No summoned critters.
