Title: Can't download plugins
Post by: pAuLiStErROX on February 19, 2011, 11:13:51 AM
Hi, I'm new to LackeyCCG and I just downloaded the program yesterday.  I need help trying to figure out why I keep getting an error EVERY time I try to update ANY plugin.  I always get timed out.  I deleted the program and redownloaded it.  I still get the error.  I'm beginning to think this program is just a myth.  Please LackeyCCG Gods, help a lost soul.  I really want to play!

Edited to make the subject more informative - Alastair

Watch the video tutorials and follow them step by step. http://lackeyccg.com/gettingstarted.html

What plugin are you having a problem with?

What operating system are you running, if its Windows 7 you need to run Lackey as administrator.. Then things should work fine

That is an error with windows, and if you have an up-to-date windows, you shouldn't need to run as an admin. If you DO need to run as admin, go update your OS.

I'm running windows vista.  I think that should be okay right?  I tried quite a few of the plugins and it would still give me the error message.  Is there something that needs to be done even before trying to update the plugins?

Did you follow the video tutorial exactly? Specifically, what plugin is causing this error?

What error?  "That" error is not particularly clear.

That error is most often the result of a firewall or similiar program blocking Lackey from accessing the internet, which it needs to do in order to download and update plugins. Make sure lackeyccg.exe is allowed through your windows firewall, or whatever firewall application you happen to be using.

I fixed my firewall to allow LackeyCCG to run.  I did everything I could but to no avail, it still didn't work.  I still get that error message.  Well, I think I'm going to give up and throw myself into a moving bus.   :'(

Is there something that I need to do before I update a plugin?  All I do is just choose a game, choose the image size and then click update from URL right?

Have you tried following the tutorial video step by step?

Yes, I followed the videos until step 2 because that's as far as I need to go.  When I try to update a plugin, the log on the bottom doesn't even show any cards being downloaded.  It just says updating from URL and then that error message pops up.  Do I need to put plugins into the plugin folder before I try anything?

As far as I can tell you are doing the steps right, but there may be something external to lackey interfering with the download.

- Check your firewall
- Check your router's firewall
- Try a different plugin (I suggest Rage :p)
- Uninstall Lackey and reinstall.
- Take a screenshot of the error, load it to photobucket (etc), post it here.

I would suggest trying the above, in that order.

And just to clarify the process:  when you use Autodownload, the first thing it does is download the updatelist file, then various text files (and just a couple of essential images) required to use the plugin.  The images come later.

You should really check your firewall settings. That was my issue.

I don't know how much more of my firewall I should check.  My computer is allowing the program it just won't let download the plugins.

Ok, so I tried deleting the program and redownloading Lackey.  I tried to extract the file using WinRAR and then I got this message.  Could this be the problem?

That means your download was corrupted. Clear your internet cache and redownload.

Letting a program run is different than letting it make network connections. I suggest you temporarily completely turn off your firewall and see if it works. Then, you can incrementally add in more security.

And as mentioned, this includes your router as well as your computer's firewall.  Just in case it wasn't hammered home enough!

Looking at that screenshot, it appears he is logged on as a guest. Maybe guests don't have permissions on that system for network stuff.

pAuLiStErROX, it appears to me like one of three things are happening. #1: You still have something on your computer, gateway or router that is blocking Lackey from connecting to websites and downloading plugins. #2: Your ISP has for some insane, and probably very stupid, reason blocked the ports that lackey uses for its communications. or #3: You're missing some obvious step that none of us has caught yet which is causing it to fail for you.
I can't really help you with #1 but let's see if #2 might apply. I want you to visit this link in your web browser: http://www.angelfire.com/funky/magiclackey/medium/updatelist.txt (http://www.angelfire.com/funky/magiclackey/medium/updatelist.txt)
If all goes well you should see a page with a bunch of lines similiar to
magic 02-15-11
plugins/magic/plugininfo.txt http://www.angelfire.com/funky/magiclackey/plugininfo.txt 110298
plugins/magic/setlist.txt http://www.angelfire.com/funky/magiclackey/setlist.txt 159700

There should not be any advertisements or anything but the plain text document with the magic info.

If you're able to view the webpage ok then we can probly scratch #2 off the list. Now as to #3, here are the steps I personally take for getting a plugin.
A: I launch LackeyCCG.exe, I am on windows 7 64bit, I run it as an administrator to bypass all the silly user access control checks that Win7 has in place.
B: I go over to the preferences tab and the plugin sub-tab. There I find the plugin I want in the drop down list (list is above the right hand box that says Plugin Info ----).
C: I select a quality, most often I use the highest one available cause I like the pretty pictures.
D: I click on the "Update from URL:" button under AutoUpdate.
E: I wait for it to finish grabbing the files for that particular plugin.
F: I then close lackey and re-launch it and the plugin is selectable by browsing (next to the load plugin button).

Well, I tried everything guys.  I thank you all for the help but I guess it just doesn't want to work for me.  I guess I have to go on my search for another site to play CCGs.   :'(
