Title: Munchkin Plugin
Post by: AdLit on February 11, 2011, 09:20:41 AM
EDIT: Link added: http://lackeyccg.com/munchkin/

Hey all,

I've been browsing the forums and I've seen multiple posts about a Munchkin plugin, but nothing stating it's been successfully completed.  Is there still interest in this?  If it has been completed, can someone point me in the direction of a plugin?  If it has not, I have images of 1 full set, and I can very easily get images for any other set people would be interested in.  Please let me know if there is interest in this as I'd really like to get it going!

Thanks,

A

*EDIT: In the meantime, I'm going to try to start this myself.  I don't have much programming experience but we'll see how it goes.  One question I have after reading the tutorial is regarding image sizes.  The author states recommended image sizes...I notice on some of the screenshots of Lackey it shows a large image of a card if you mouse over.  Do I need to prepare images of various sizes then for a single game, or is that just a stretched image of the card?  Thanks again. *

Making a plugin doesn't require any "programming". As a matter of fact, all you really need to do is get the card images and the card data (in tab-delimetted spreadsheet style) format. The rest I can help you with and do in a few minutes. Making plugins is pretty simple once you have the images and card data.

I'm not sure what image you're referring to, but I suggest 2 versions, or 1 depending on what the card images you have look like. For example, say the card is designed in such a way that it needs to be really large for you to read it. In that case you probably want a high version of the plugin so people can read the cards, and maybe a medium so people can "mostly" read the cards but at the same time the cards aren't unwieldy and huge. In the later case, people may need to read the card's text from the pop up text box.

Thanks for the reply, and your help would be awesome.  I have the image files already, and can share a link if you need access to them.  The question i have in terms of creating the plugin is that Munchkin functions with just 2 shared decks; there aren't really any "player" decks, just table decks that all players draw from.  So a general function like DRAWCARD would need to specify from which deck.  I can work on getting the card data in excel right now (it's 168 cards total, 100 for the "doors" and 68 for the "treasure").  Do you have a recommended image size for the cards?  Right now I have some that are original full card size, and others that are shrunk down ~35%.

Thank you again!

*EDIT: One quick question - Since I would need 2 decks to be available and accessible to all players, do they need to be written in separate spreadsheets, or would they be in 1 spreadsheet and just listed as separate "Sets"?

It doesn't matter if you use 1 spreadsheet file with all sets, or if you break the sets into multiple files. Unless you have over around 5,000 cards, it's probably best to have it all in a single file.

The set a card is from has nothing to do with it being in a deck.

For a deck everyone draws from, the player in seat one will load the decks and all players will use a draw function that sends a cards from it to their hand. That's easy to do.

As for card image size, it depends what the cards look like. If the art is stellar, you might want a version along the lines of like 312x445. If the art isn't great, then you can just use card images that are small but large enough for the text to be easily read.

Thanks again for your help.  I've resized all of my images for the 2 decks, and I've written my carddata.txt file in tab delineated text format.  I also tried to write the plugininfo.txt file, and I think I've done it correctly but if you could look it over that'd be great; I'm not sure how to handle the draw functions from the two different decks.  For the setlist.txt file, I'm assuming since everything is going into that one carddata file, that my setlist.txt just looks like:

1
carddata.txt

Is that correct?  And where should I go from here?  Let me know if I should post the plugininfo.txt here.
Again, thanks for the help!  The prospect of actually getting this done in a day is awesome.

Ya, that looks right.

Post your plugininfo.txt. How many communal decks are there? Exactly what the TRANSFERCARD functions will look like will depend on how many and in what order you have your zones.

The plugininfo.txt is pasted below.  There are 2 communal decks, a door deck and a treasure deck.  Basically game starts with each player dealt 4 cards from each deck into their hand.  Then a dice is rolled - highest number goes first.  That player draws a door card, face up.  If it is a monster, combat ensues, and all players may be invited to assist or hinder the combat; defeating a monster grants a level-up to the player initiating combat and you draw treasure cards as dictated by the monster card; such treasure is drawn face down or face up depending if other players were helping in combat.  If the drawn door card was not a monster, the player may "look for trouble" by initiating combat with a monster card from the hand.  Alternatively, they may end their turn by "looting the room" and taking an extra door card into their hand, face down. Not sure if I'm explaining this well, so here's a link to the rules: http://www.worldofmunchkin.com/rules/booty_rules.pdf (http://www.worldofmunchkin.com/rules/booty_rules.pdf)

I tried looking through the folders that come with the example plugin when you download Lackey, but Im not sure of where I'm supposed to put everything.

As for the transfercard functions, cards would have to be sent to their respective discard piles (door or treasure) and cards can also be sent from player to player (if someone curses you, for example).

What are you wondering about where it goes?

REUSECARDIMAGES is turned on, which is fine. This means all card images are downloaded to a single place, namely plugins/munchkin/sets/setimages/general/. Note that this option means you must have all card image files have unique names, which I would suggest is good in any situation.

CARDBACK0:"doorback"
CARDBACK1:"treasureback"
That's wrong.

Just have CARDBACK0:"cardback" and name the image file like that. To have the other card back, you need to add to the plugininfo.txt:
ISALLOWINGMULTIPLECARDBACKS:"yes"
And in the ImageFile column you should enter something like:
Alpha001,treasureback

You don't have any text (or any other) column in your card data file?

One thing I just thought of - do the cardback images need to be put into the carddata.txt file?  Was that what you were referring to when you said to make the Imagefile column Alpha001,tresaureback, or is that just placed in the plugininfo.txt file?

And as far as wondering where stuff goes, basically it was that I wasn't sure what the file directory structure should be.  I figure everything has to be placed in a particular folder in order for it to load up properly.

As of now I didn't add extra info to the carddata.txt file since I wanted to see if everything loaded up correctly first.  I figured I could add that information in to the file later.  If you think it's better for me to do that stuff beforehand, I'll work on that now.  Also, I wasn't sure it would be very useful to have the text since you always play this game with the full deck, and would never really need to swap out cards.

*EDIT: by the way i think I've done something wrong, since when I load Lackey and go to preferences and choose munchkin to load the plugin, nothing happens.  As soon as I choose munchkin it returns to the default screen and to the "war3000" default plugin.  Any suggestions?*

The 3rd column in the card data file is the card image file name excluding the path and suffix. If there is a card image BESIDES the default, add a comma and the back card image.

For the file hierarchy, take a look at a different plugin for an example.

You can put the card data in later. It isn't required to make things functional.

If you can't load the plugin, make sure you plugininfo.txt is where it should be and the cardback.jpg is at plugins/munchkin/sets/setimages/general/cardback.jpg.

Also I just downloaded the YuGiOh! plugin, and my file structure is the same, so I know that shouldnt be the issue.  Any help you can give would be great - hope I'm not getting annoying.

*EDIT: So after loading the YuGiOh! plugin, I can load the munchkin plugin.  However I don't see any cards listed in the deck editor, and I get the error:

"Deck file not found: plugins/munchkin booty/decks

What is a deck file? By comparison, the YuGiOh! plugin doesn't seem to have any deck files yet you can see the card list.

Here's my carddata.txt, if that helps:

In the interest of maybe helping to see where I'm at, I uploaded my Lackey folder, so that you'd be able to see my plugins folder with what I've done so far.  Maybe that would be helpful??

I can't figure out where I'm tripping up.

No. You don't mention cardback anywhere in the card data file. The only time you mention a second card image file is if the card back is different from the default.

Ok, after reading your post and re-reading the tutorial i understand the alternate card back now.  Do you have any insight or suggestions as to why when I load the plugin there aren't any cards listed in the deck editor for me to add to the game??

The only difference I can see from my files and the YuGiOh I downloaded as a model is that the text files seem to be formatted differently.  I created my carddata file in excel and exported as tab delineated text, but it doesnt look like the YuGiOh one...I created my plugininfo.text based upon the tutorial, but I hit "enter" between command lines, while it looks like the YuGiOh version did not....

Could this be the issue?

You card data file didn't have any new lines. Each cel should be separated by tabs. Each line should be separated by a new line character. You can box select the cels in excel and paste to a simple text file if you have a problem getting things right.

EDIT: link removed

That should work. It seems like there may be a bug causing the alternate card back to show, and also the Draw function to draw from your Treasure deck doesn't seem to work right. I will investigate those. In the interim, you could just manually move the cards.
Do you have separate hands for treasure and booty cards?

Trevor,

Thanks a lot for your help with this man, really appreciate it.  I've been trying to make a munchkin program for the past couple of weeks and just found this today, and I think Lackey is by far the best way to do it.  I'm sure you've got more things to do than just help me, so thank you again.  The cards properly show up in the list now when I load the plugin.  And from the looks of it, I would just have to select the individual booty cards to add them to that deck, and same for the treasure cards.  Thanks!

I had written for a Door Card (booty) hand, but I hadn't written for a Treasure Card Hand in the plugininfo.txt file since you typically would play your treasures on the table once you receive them; I suppose it could be written as a transfer-to-table instead of drawn to hand, but they would need to be transferred face down, since they would normally go to your hand first for review.

Who is currently maintaining this plugin? At best it should be called "Munchkin Booty" (and its only Munchkin Booty 1)

I've actually got a far more thorough munchkin plugin back when the newest build was 10-14-09. Right off the bat if you're going to include some of the newer expansions you're going to need more decks. (and thus draw buttons). I'd be happy to send along my plugin-definiton to give you an idea of what I did.

Has  Munchkin 1-6; Booty 1;Star 1-2;The good the Bad the Munchkin-data (needs images); Fairy Dust-(images needing processing); Various Promo cards; The Iphone boons (which I'd probably strip out) Cluthlu 1-3 (images only, text not inputted seperately); Super Munchkin 1 (card texts only;images lost in hd crash)

I've got waiting to be added: data and images for the old Munchkin 7 (More Good Cards); Waiting for Santa; Santa's Revenge;Booty 2; Fish and Chips; & Warehouse 23 Exclusive 2010 Booster.

Does the new version of lackey support larger deck sizes before I go through the trouble of adding the additional cards? I'd love to play a massive blender game.

I'd like to get the data for Munchkin Marked for Death & Munchkinomicon ;Munchkinomicon would be helpful so I can add those draw-type buttons and the like for the 'Spells' before passing it on.

Edit: I wrote this thinking it was an extension of one of those existing Munchkin threads I posted in a long time ago. Perhaps it'd be best if we got in contact directly AdLit; Drop me a PM.

Lackey should allow any deck size. Let me know if you have any problem and I will fix it.

The deck contents now operate correctly at greater than 300 Unique cards per zone (which you 'load to you'). Which is wonderful! I'm still stuck with a 1000 images loaded maximum though; and there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which cards are loaded with images.  Presently I have approximately 1500 unique cards to load for a blender game; I suspect increasing the Limit to 3000 will accommodate the rest of the cards I'm looking to add.

Thoughts on the public plugin:

Needs to be a way to draw a face-down treasure directly to hand. (If you beat a monster on your own, this is what you do). Treasures drawn to the table should be face up *(if you got help, you have to do it this way so everyone sees what you got, and if the person gets any for helping, they'll select from these.);

Player 2+ can't draw the doors since they're not statically pulling from the first players draw deck.; Only the first player should be required to load a deck of cards.

There are 2 people working on a munchkin plugin. That is bad. Talk amongst yourselves and coordinate your efforts.

2 different plugins for the same name will cause lots of errors and confusion. If you can't come to an agreement, talk with me and I'll cast the tie-breaking vote.

I think it's a bad idea to have cards that should be on the table in zones off to the side. If you don't have enough room, zoom out and you will.

Regarding draw functions, remember that you CAN manually move a card from one place to another, so you actually don't need any specific card drawing or placing cards on table functions. And holding down control key will flip a card in case you want to drop it face down. With that said, if you frequently do one of those and want a function I can make that function work.

These are the combinations I know of:
drawing from doors to hand
drawing from treasure to hand
moving from doors to table (face up)
moving from doors to table (face down)
moving from treasure to table (face up)
moving from treasure to table (face down)

Of those, which should be included in the plugin, and which should be additionally included as buttons below the table?

You are doing the different card back wrong. See the other plugin.

Effective combat total, if you really need that as a stat, is too long. Shorten it to something like total or EFT or something so it fits better.

Text should be the right most column in your card data file.

As for the fact that we're both working on a plugin. I had the work done more than a year ago, I just didn't share it at the time. I pointed out some design differences and problems that I saw while attempting to play a game with the existing public plugin. 'Draw Door' and 'Draw Door To Table' rely on both users having card decks loaded, when only one deck should be loaded to play the game.

---

Effective combat total is so you don't have to keep adding up your static bonuses all the time, I routinely wind up with combat strengths of 30-40; while at a  level of 14-15 when playing an epic game.

CARDBACK is NOT a field for cardback images.  First, this was before the new plugin formats allowed for multiple cardbacks. Secondly, the field is used to determine which superzone you should be placing the cards into (and thus which pack I'm pulling the cards out of).

Doors to table never occurs facedown, all facedown draws are direct to hand.

Dungeons to hand occurs rarely and is done manually when it occurs.

While you can do all of the draw actions manually, why? I've got room for the buttons to do them, and it guarantees you preform them correctly for what you're trying to accomplish.

Sorry for not commenting in this thread for a bit.  My computer was dead and then work picked up, so not much time.

QuoteI think it's a bad idea to have cards that should be on the table in zones off to the side.

I agree with you here.  I usually place my "one time use only" cards in their own pile on the side and look through them as needed

QuoteRegarding draw functions, remember that you CAN manually move a card from one place to another, so you actually don't need any specific card drawing or placing cards on table functions. And holding down control key will flip a card in case you want to drop it face down. With that said, if you frequently do one of those and want a function I can make that function work.

I agree here too in the sense that it was worth an "extra step" if you want to look at it that way, since it left less clutter in the button list.  I'm not against adding a function button to draw treasure directly to hand instead of face down to table.

As for drawing combinations:
drawing from doors to hand<-- Done on every turn at least once if not multiple times
drawing from treasure to hand<-- Done on some turns, but multiple cards drawn at a time
moving from doors to table (face up)<-- Done on every turn at least once
moving from doors to table (face down)<-- This is actually not done at all; doors would go to the hand or table face up
moving from treasure to table (face up)<-- Done on occassion, and again multiple cards at a time
moving from treasure to table (face down)<-- This is actually not done at all; treasures would go to the hand or table face up

Again, I was initially thinking along the lines of less buttons for less clutter, so my thought was that if you draw to table face down, you can always send it to your hand or flip it over, which I didn't mind.  If you feel the buttons would improve play, go for it.

QuoteEffective combat total, if you really need that as a stat, is too long. Shorten it to something like total or EFT or something so it fits better.

I'd say not essential, but if you want it you do have to make sure you code the text for every card to include how much it would add to the total.  I didn't bother to do this since when you play the game in "real life" you have to calculate it yourself anyway.  I didn't feel like it was worth it to factor in for every card the attack bonus, especially when you start to get into the arena of cards with special add-on bonuses or situational bonuses.  I felt it was easier to just manually count it.

Additionally, IceClaw is right; at least in solitaire, the TestDummy can't draw any cards from the deck that you load as Player 1.  I'm not sure how to correct that.

Just a quick heads up to everyone, we've started communicating via PM, but I thought I'd post one last update to this thread:

It doesn't just happen in 'solitare' mode, it happens in any game with more than one player as well. (At least it did when I used it last night as updated by the updatelist) The issue mentioned is resolved with the plugindata I wrote above, but we'll be improving it.

Personally I prefer the buttons since it means I can map them to function keys for quick use of the action.

You only need the image or the text. Both is just convenience.

The counter is something players can use or not but I figured that can be the players choice and to support it at the plugin level. Its not that difficult to keep track of cards which provide an extra bonus in certain situations. If one applies, just note in chat when the combat occurs and move on. It's a 'base' of 'equipped+level' for you to start adding or subtracting one-shots to.;

I've got a habit of just adding the images first if I can find them for playability, and going back to the card text later when I've got time, or am in the mood to sit down and type.; For stuff where I just have card text and not scans, text's just what I've got. .

We're actively working on the plugin, with the goal of releasing it once it's as complete as possible.  We're working towards a comprehensive game both in content and functionality.  Our schedules have gotten a little tight lately so we are working a little slower, but in the next week or so we should have a lot of progress.

I've got no idea why you can't add more cards, Xanderg7,If you're only able to add 1-4 and it wont take 5 something strange is going on.  I've got roughly 1900 english cards with no problem.

I'd be suggest forking off the foreign card scans/texts/UI into a seperate plugin. I do have access to some more foreign image sets, but they're practically useless to me. I'll be dropping you a PM Xanderg though about what we've got going so far, and try and give you a baseline so you only have to translate the non-card portions for consistancy.

We're currently waiting on a mass scan from a high-speed scanner so I can replace some of my really bad images. We've got a whole bunch of sets.
